Statments by Great Leaders of Prayer

S. D. Gordon – Noted Prayer Leader
“The greatest thing anyone can do for God and for man is to pray. You can do more than pray after you’ve prayed. But you cannot do more than pray – until you’ve prayed.”

John Wesley – Revivalist Preacher
“God will do nothing but in answer to prayer.”

E. M. Bounds – Writer, Man of Prayer During the Civil War
“God shapes the world by prayer. The more praying there is in the world, the better the world will be and the mightier the forces against evil. God continues His cause and purpose of life on earth through the eternal value of prayer.”

Paul E. Billheimer – Author, Destined For The Throne
“That God will do nothing in the realm of human redemption, since its inception, outside of this scheme of prayer and intercession is indicated by God’s many pressing invitations to prayer in His Word. He not only invites: He entreats, He importunes, He urges. He even begs us to exercise this privilege. One translator has paraphrased Mt. 7:7, thus: ‘Ask, I ask you to ask; seek, I entreat you to seek; knock, I urge you to knock.’ Evidently, He can do nothing without our prayers. He not only invites and exhorts us to pray, He also commands!”

Andrew Murray – Dutch Reformer, Teacher, Author
“God’s intense longing to bless seems, in some sense, to be graciously limited by His dependence on intercession. God regards intercession as the highest expression of His people’s readiness to receive and to yield themselves wholly to the working of His almighty power. God rules the world and His Church through the prayers of His people. That God should have made the extension of His Kingdom, to such a large extent, dependent on the faithfulness of His people and prayer is a stupendous mystery and yet an absolute certainty.”

Martin Luther – German Reformer in the 1600’s
“We must achieve everything through prayer – to be able to keep what we have and to defend it against our enemies, the devil, and the world. Therefore, it is the particular work of Christians, who have the Spirit of God, to be incessant and constant in their praying.”

Watchman Nee – Chinese Leader Imprisoned for His Faith
“How is God’s will to be done on earth? Only by … remembering … that the Church at prayer is heaven’s outlet, the channel of release for heaven’s power, and that this ministry is our greatest possible work.”

David Wilkerson – Late Founder of Teen Challenge
“All soul’s won on the streets are first won in prayer.”

A Few Key Scriptures on Prayer

Quote from Isaiah 62:6, 7
“On your walls, O Jerusalem, I have appointed watchmen; all day and all night they will never keep silent. You who remind the Lord, take no rest for yourselves; and give Him no rest until He establishes and makes Jerusalem a praise in the earth.”

Quote from Paul from Ephesians 6:18
“With all prayer and petition, pray at all times in the Spirit, and with this view in mind, be on the alert with all perseverance and petition for all the saints.”

Quote from Peter from 1 Peter 4:7
“The end of all things is at hand. Therefore, be of sound judgment and sober spirit for the purpose of prayer.”

Quotes from Jesus from Matthew 26:41; Luke 21:36
“Keep watching and praying lest you fall into temptation.”

“Keep on the alert at all times, praying that you have strength to escape all these things that are about to take place, and to stand before the Son of Man.”

Responses to the End Times

A lot is taught on what will happen in the End Times. But, little is taught on what are attitudes and actions will we need to adopt to be able to avoid the snare (Luke 21:34, 35) that comes upon the whole earth?

But, Jesus taught a lot on this subject. Now let’s quickly take a took from the NIV compare the verbs found in Matthew 24, Mark 13 and Luke 21.

From Matthew 24
24:4 – watch out that no one deceives you
24:6 – see to it that you are not alarmed
24:13 – stand firm to the end
24:42 – keep watch

From Mark 13
13:5 – watch out that no one deceives you
13:7 – do not be alarmed
13:9 – be on your guard
13:11 – do not worry
13:13 – stand firm
13:23 – be on your guard
13:32 – be on guard, be alert
13:35 – keep watch
13:37 – watch

From Luke 21
21:8 – watch out that you are not deceived
21:9 – do not be frightened
21:14 – make up your mind not to worry
21:19 – stand firm
21:28 – stand up
21:36 – be always on the watch

4 times Jesus said, “Do not be afraid.”
4 times Jesus said, “Stand firm.”
11 times Jesus said, “Watch”.

When the role of the watchmen is restored and recognized, there will be a great awakening in the Church and Israel as Ezekiel 37:10 promises, “So, I prophesied as He commanded me, and breath came into them, and they lived, and stood upon their feet, an exceedingly great army.”

“Blessed are those servants whom the master, when he comes, will find watching.” Luke 12:37
